Kreaturi

Children’s participatory clay project

2017

Kreaturi (2017) is a project co-deveoloped by Raffaella Zammit together with Umberto Buttigieg, Andrea Pullicino and Joyce Camilleri in collaboration with the Gabriel Caruana Foundation. Through a series of clay workshops as part o f the Gabriel Caruana Foundation artistic programme for The Mill – Art, Culture and Crafts Centre, Birkirkara the project hosted a group of children (7 to 10 year olds). The workshops focused on ceramic hand-building techniques with the aim of creating unique sculptures based on the kids’ individual expression and experiences.

During the workshops, children were introduced to modern art in Malta, the main modern artists and Gabriel Caruana’s artistic legacy, with a focus on his biomorphic figures. Basic clay techniques where introduced to support the children’s creations. Children were encouraged to make use of their personal personal sketchbooks and manipulate clay to create their sculpture. During the workshops the square adjacent to The Mill was also used as an extension of the workspace. Through the use of music and shadow play the children created collaborative paintings in public space.

Following these workshops, an exhibition at Spazju Kreattiv, Valletta, was held forming part of the ŻiguŻajg Festival (November 2017). The exhibition, curated by Umberto Buttigieg, showcased the children’s artistic creations alongside selected works of Gabriel Caruana.
